What is the definition of barrier for a material?
1. The barrier property of a material refers to the barrier performance of a specific permeate from one side of the material to the other side (generally from the high concentration side through the material to the low concentration side). Common permeates include inorganic gases, water vapor, and organics. The barrier properties corresponding to the permeates of different properties are called gas permeability (oxygen permeability, nitrogen permeability, carbon dioxide permeability, etc.), moisture permeability and organic matter permeability.
2. Usually, when we say that a material has good barrier properties, it means that the material should have good gas barrier properties, water vapor barrier properties, and organic matter barrier properties at the same time. To say that a certain material has good barrier properties should mean that it has good barrier properties for a specific permeate. It is difficult for a single material to have good barrier properties for all permeates. For example, materials with good gas barrier properties may not necessarily have good barrier properties to water vapor and organic matter. Even if the gas barrier property of a certain material is good, it means that it has good barrier property against a specific gas. For example, good oxygen barrier or nitrogen barrier; another example is that the commonly used HDPE has better water barrier performance than PA, but the gas barrier performance is lower than PA; another example is EVOH has high gas barrier property when the ambient humidity is very low.However, as the ambient humidity increases, after absorbing water, its barrier property to inorganic gases will decrease significantly, and the corresponding water vapor barrier performance will deteriorate. Therefore, when actually asking suppliers for the barrier properties of cosmetic packaging, it is necessary to specify what barrier properties are required. Depending on the direction of infiltration, it is distinguished whether to block infiltration or effusion.
